How to Prevent PVC Fittings from Cracking in Freezing Temperatures?

Jan 16, 2025

Material and quality control

1. Choose PVC materials with good cold resistance

  • PVC materials with different formulations have different cold resistance properties. When purchasing PVC accessories, choose accessories made of PVC materials with special cold resistance modifications. These materials are usually optimized in molecular structure and can maintain good flexibility at lower temperatures.
  • For example, some high-end PVC pipes add special plasticizers, such as dioctyl adipate (DOA) or dioctyl sebacate (DOS). These plasticizers can reduce the glass transition temperature of PVC materials, making them less brittle in low-temperature environments. The glass transition temperature is the temperature at which the material changes from a glassy state to a highly elastic state. When the temperature is lower than the glass transition temperature, the material becomes hard and brittle.

 2. Check product quality

  • Carefully check the quality of PVC accessories, including whether there are obvious defects in the appearance and whether the wall thickness is uniform. PVC accessories with uneven wall thickness are prone to stress concentration when the temperature changes due to different degrees of thermal expansion and contraction in different parts, thereby increasing the risk of cracking.
  • For example, when checking PVC pipe fittings, use a caliper to measure the wall thickness of different parts to ensure that the wall thickness deviation is within the allowable range. At the same time, check whether there are defects such as cracks and bubbles on the surface of the fittings, which may become the starting point of cracking in a low-temperature environment.

Installation and construction precautions

1. Appropriate installation depth and slope

  • When installing the PVC pipe system, ensure that the pipe has a certain buried depth. Generally speaking, in cold areas, the top soil cover depth of the buried pipe should be determined according to the local permafrost depth. It is usually recommended that the soil cover depth be greater than the local maximum permafrost depth of 30-50 cm.
  • In this way, the insulation effect of the soil can be used to reduce the impact of low temperature on the pipe. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that the pipe has a certain slope so that when the pipe system needs to be drained, the water in the pipe can be quickly drained to prevent the water from freezing and expanding in the pipe, causing the accessories to crack. For example, the slope of the drainage pipe is generally not less than 0.3%-0.5%.

2. Reasonable pipe support and fixing

  • Properly install pipe support and fixing devices to avoid excessive deformation of PVC pipes and accessories due to their own weight, medium weight or external pressure. Excessive deformation will cause stress inside the PVC material, which may aggravate the cracking of the material at low temperatures.
  • For horizontal pipes, hangers or brackets should be installed at the specified spacing. For example, for PVC pipes with smaller diameters (such as DN50 or less), the hanger spacing is generally not more than 1.5 meters; for pipes with larger diameters (such as DN100 or more), the hanger spacing can be appropriately increased, but generally not more than 3 meters. For vertical pipes, fixed brackets should be set at the bottom and appropriate intervals.

3. Avoid over-tightening and stress concentration

  • When connecting PVC accessories, such as using threaded or flanged connections, avoid over-tightening. Over-tightening will cause the accessories to bear excessive axial and shear forces, resulting in local stress concentration in the accessories.
  • For example, when using PVC flange connections, tighten the bolts according to the specified torque. Generally, a torque wrench can be used to control the tightening torque. For threaded PVC accessories, ensure that the seal is good when tightening, and do not use excessive force to prevent damage to the accessories.

Insulation and maintenance measures

1. Use of insulation materials

  • Wrap insulation materials around PVC accessories that may be frozen, such as rubber and plastic sponge, polyurethane foam, etc. These insulation materials have good insulation properties and can effectively reduce heat transfer and reduce the degree of influence of low temperature on accessories.
  • For example, wrap a layer of 2-3 cm thick rubber and plastic sponge insulation pipe around outdoor PVC faucet accessories and seal it with tape. The thickness of the insulation material can be adjusted appropriately according to the local coldness. The thickness of the insulation material can be appropriately increased in cold areas.

2. Drainage and venting measures

  • Before winter comes, make sure the water in the PVC pipe system can be drained. For systems that cannot be drained, such as fire sprinkler systems, consider adding antifreeze.
  • For example, in some seasonal irrigation systems, open all drain valves after use to drain the water in the pipes and accessories. For some parts where there is a small amount of accumulated water that cannot be drained, use compressed air to blow out the accumulated water.

3. Regular inspection and maintenance

Inspect the PVC pipe system regularly, especially before and after winter. Check whether the accessories have signs of cracks, deformation, etc., and promptly find and replace the problematic accessories.
For example, conduct a visual inspection of the outdoor PVC pipe system once a month, focusing on the joints and parts that are susceptible to freezing. If tiny cracks are found, they can be repaired with special PVC glue; if the cracks are large, the accessories need to be replaced.
