How to tell if a ball valve is open or closed?

Aug 25, 2024

A ball valve is a valve that controls the flow of fluid by rotating a ball with a hole. Ball valves are widely used in various industrial and household systems because of their simple and reliable design.

How to determine the state of a ball valve?

Observation of electric device status: For electric ball valves, the working status of the motor can intuitively reflect the status of the valve. When the valve is fully open, the motor stops working and keeps the valve in the fully open position; conversely, when the valve is closed, the motor will also stop working. In addition, some electric ball valves are equipped with sensors and display screens that can display the switch status of the valve in real time and provide accurate feedback.

Check the position of the ball: The working principle of the ball valve is based on the rotation of the ball to control the flow direction of the fluid. When the through hole of the ball is aligned with the axis of the pipeline, it means that the valve is in the open state and allows the fluid to pass; if the ball is rotated 90 degrees so that the through hole is perpendicular to the axis of the pipeline, the valve is in the closed state and the fluid is blocked. In manually operated ball valves, by rotating the handwheel or handle, the change in the position of the ball can be observed to determine the status of the valve.

Auxiliary detection means: In addition to direct observation and manual operation, there are other auxiliary means to help determine the status of the ball valve. For example, an indicator light or display interface can visually display the open or closed status of the valve; a pressure gauge reading can reflect whether the valve is closed; a mechanical detection element such as a reed switch and a magnet combination can provide a position signal for a swing arm ball valve. In some cases, troubleshooting indicators can also provide useful information, such as different colors of light indicating different valve states or fault information.

Common ball valve problems and solutions

 Ball valve stuck
Sometimes the ball valve may get stuck and not turn easily. In this case, try using an appropriate lubricant or have a professional check it.

  Loose handle
If the handle feels loose, it may be that the internal connection is loose. Check the internal structure of the valve or re-secure the handle.
